Top 10: YA Girls

To me, there is just one thing better than a hot guy in YA.... and that's a strong heroine that can hold her own against anyone. Below is a list of my favorite females in young adult.

Rated on BADASSNESS

10. Schuyler from Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz
Why is Schuyler a badass? Because traumatic things keep happening to Sky and the ones that she loves, but she doesn't give up. Hell, she traverses across Europe with no one but Oliver, and they're constantly running and hiding. She has a tough life, but she never let any of that get in the way of what she needed to do.

9. Adele from The Greyfriar by Clay Griffith and Susan Griffith
Almost every character in The Greyfriar was strong and kickass, but Adele especially. She's held prisoner by the most feared vampire in the world, and she barely blinks an eye. She was extremely resilient, and survived several up close and personal fights with various vamps. I would be crazy not to put her on this list.
8. Claire from Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
Claire is the perfect case of 'brains over brawn'. A lot of the girls on this list are great physical fighters, and have the ability to make a grown man twice their size drop in an unconscious heap. But not Claire. Her badassness comes in the form of an uber-brain. Claire is smart enough to be 16 and already in college. She's even smart enough to be the apprentice of one of the smartest (and looniest) vampires in the world.
7. Katsa from Graceling by Kristin Cashore
In Graceling, some people have these special traits called Graces. Katsa's Grace made her pretty much invincible. It was awesome reading about her fight scenes, because she barely struggled at all. Katsa rocks.
6. Clary from City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
I think it's obvious that Clary was going to make it onto this list. She's a Shadowhunter, which is like an automatic stamp of BADASS onto her forehead. But she also has this crazy cool ability to make up runes that don't officially exist. And she's brave enough to run into a house full of vampires to save her best friend. That takes major cojones.
5. Ellie from Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton
Ellie is the only person in the entire world that can wield the flaming angelfire swords. Could you imagine going up against her in a fight? I'm pretty sure I would run away screaming, because her utter awesomeness would probably kill me without her touching me. Plus, I love the name Ellie.
4. Riley from The Demon Trapper's Daughter by Jana Oliver
Riley is a demon trapper, which means that it's her job to rid the world of demons. Her father is Paul Blackthorne, one of the most respected demon trappers around, so she's got some big shoes to fill. But she holds her own really well. She took down a level 3 demon all by herself. Not even older, more accomplished demon trappers would dare try that. She also has some major cojones.
3. Dru from Strange Angels by Lili St. Crow
In many ways, Dru and Riley are very similar, but there's a subtle difference between the two. The only reason that Dru is one ahead of Riley is because, well, Dru's primary weapon on choice are big, lethal guns. It takes bravery to even touch a gun, let alone have a house full of them and like it's no big deal. That, and Dru had to shoot her own zombie dad. I don't think I would have been able to do that.
2. Rose from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
This was a really huge toss-up between Rose, and the current holder of the number 1 position. Rose is seriously one of the most badass chicks I've ever read about. Her whole life's purpose is to protect Lissa, so that entails a lot of time training and fighting. Rose is  fearless.
1. Katniss from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Again, this was a tough pick, but finally I chose Katniss. Reading The Hunger Games was one of the most thrilling reading experiences I've had, and it's because of her. She just grabbed everything by the horns and did what she needed to do to survive, as well as to keep Peeta alive. She fought hard and through tough situations and gruesome sights. Katniss earns my stamp of #1 BADASS.

  4. Love that you have Katsa on here. Graceling doesn't always get the attention it should. I think I need to read a few of these that I've missed (The Demon Trapper's Daughter and Angelfire). Great list!

  5. Heck yeah, Katniss! No Ginny Weasley, though? Or are you going only off of books where the main character is a badass girl?

  8. What about Suze Simon from Meg Cabot's The Mediator Series. She kicks ghost butt and she does it with perfect hair. For that matter Jessica Masteriani from Cabot's Vanished series is pretty fierce too using her psychic powers to save missing children. Love the choices though.
